Home Chef vs. Blue Apron: What Meal Kit Delivery Company Matches What You’re Looking For

When you do your research on meal kit delivery services, there will be many companies that you come across. Is one better than the other? Which company measures up as being the best of the best? When it comes to choices, two names that will stand out include Home Chef and Blue Apron

What is about these two that makes them so worthwhile above all others besides the convenience for those who don’t like to cook or don’t have time to cook?

What Does Home Chef Have To Offer To The Meal Kit Delivery Industry

There is so much to enjoy with the Home Chef subscription with plans for two, four or six people. While you can choose as many dishes as you would like, the minimum amount is two.  Home Chef even offers a Customize It features so you can change how proteins, have a higher-quality of meat cut or double how much protein you want in your meals.

Home Chef provides an array of dishes to choose from each week – 17 with three of them being five-minute, quick-fix lunch choices and 14 dinner dishes. These meals have been designed to meet various dietary requirements, including low-calorie, low-carb, vegetarian, etc.  And, with its Customize It option, you can change your meals to how you see fit.

Home Chef offers meals of all cuisines from American, Asian, Italian and Mexican, and uses meats, fish, poultry and vegetables of all types.   The company is focused on offering meals the family will love, classic meals that many people remember (but with a slight twist). These meals are easy to make for teens and adults.

Home Chef goes even further with its add-ons feature, which includes a wide selection of five-minute, no-fuss cooking lunches such as bowls, sandwiches and salads. The cost is $7.99 a serving. They also offer a smoothie with weekly flavor changes and a seasonal fruit basket – the cost for each is $4.95.

What To Expect From The Home Chef Box

When you order from Home Chef, your ingredients are placed in individual bags that you can see right through with ice surrounding proteins, which are placed on the bottom for them to stay cool during the shipping and delivery process. You’ll know when your Home Chef box arrives as it arrives in labeled cartons.

What Does Blue Apron Have To Offer To The Meal Kit Delivery Industry

There are two plans to choose from with Blue Apron with a plan for two people and one for four. In the two people plan, you can choose three meals a week while the family plan (four-people plan) lets you choose four meals a week.

Blue Apron gives the two-people plan eight meals to choose from every week; the family plan has six meals it can choose from (however, some meals may show up on both menus). Some meals have been tailored to fit into the vegetarian lifestyle and Weight Watchers lifestyle.

Its cuisine choices are similar to Home Chef – American, Italian, Mexican, etc. Their meal options are a bit more sophisticated, but with easy-to-follow directions, you can quickly make the dishes. Blue Apron promises to use meats with no hormones added, farm-fresh vegetables (if possible, organic) and sustainably-sourced seafood.

Like Home Chef, Blue Apron does give you some add-on options, including wines with its $65.99 a month subscription (six bottles of your choice). They can even recommend what wines to go with the meals you choose. Their retail section offers general kitchen supplies, including cookware.

Again, Blue Apron is like Home Chef in the way it designs its box and how it ships its proteins – surrounded by ice and on the bottom. However, there are no ingredient labels on packages, and they’re not individually wrapped. Simply put, you’ll need to go through it and sort them out for every meal.

What Does Home Chef and Blue Apron Have In Common?

Blue Apron and Home Chef’s website and apps are well-designed, making it easy to register an account, choose a plan (or change it), lay out what eating preferences you want, choose the meals you’d like to have and make changes to your payment method.

Since these are subscription services, you can’t just order one time, and that’s it. They both have flexible plans that allow you to skip weeks if necessary and choose which day you want your food delivered.

Where they differ? If you choose to cancel your plan with Home Chef, you can do so by website. With Blue Apron, however, you must email the customer support. They will get back to you within the day.

Which One Is Better For Your Lifestyle?

There are some very appealing qualities to both Home Chef and Blue Apron, such as classic and easy-to-cook meals.  However, for most people, it’ll be Home Chef that takes the prize. How so? It’s not just the Customize It feature or its five-minute lunch, seasonal fruit basket and smoothies that make it so worthwhile. No, it’s all about the food with how many choices you get, the portion sizes and the overall taste of each one.
